Briefly

General term for any vehicle capable of air travel.

The term is believed to originate from a common trend in most nations with airship technology. Many developed and mastered ship construction for water travel first. When these nations moved on to ships designed for air travel, much of their water ship design influenced the design of these new vehicles. Hence the term 'ships of the air', or airship.
