BACKGROUNDCiet is little more than a rat's nest. Tales of its riches are terribly overblown; in truth, only a few people have struck rich off its resources, and mostly by exploiting as many people as possible. As for the rest of the Cietian? Short-sighted traditionalists who stay in the country for any variety of ignorant reasons. For the average citizen, an indoctrinated, misguided sense of loyalty does the trick... ...And that's why Emil Bence left his homeland. He'll tell you the whole story--quite vehemently and with not a few invectives--if you like. Of course, he'll like as not tell you the story if you don't like. Emil couldn't be described as a particularly personable individual. Indeed, aggravating would be a generous term. Really, it's not the self-centeredness and general disregard for the truth that's so much an issue; the fact of the matter is, Emil is always unhappy. It's rare that he goes an entire conversation without complaining about something. Ah, and that note about the truth? Yes, well. It's not that Emil is unaware of the distinction between fiction and nonfiction, or even unable to deal with it. Indeed, he handles it as necessary, which is rather a useful thing considering the often cooperative nature of his work, and its hierarchical power structure. It's just that he doesn't like the truth so much. So, when possible, in the place of less comfortable facts, Emil is fond of mistellings, misrepresentations, misstatements and downright lies. He's not necessarily good or consistent at this; nonetheless, it is uncommon indeed to get him to admit to his creativities. Emil takes particular liberty with his reasons for leaving home, with only the most important and relevant of his employers being aware of the actual circumstances. While ostensibly he left Ciet because the country is a horrible, worthless place no intelligent person would want to stay in, in reality Emil's departure was not nearly so--happy. You see, strange things happen around Emil--born Lachlan Sem Furkan, actually. Sometimes, these things are pretty harmless. Most times they are. Sometimes they aren't entirely. They are, however, all very strange. It was about the time half the corn field turned to bright pink squash that the Furkan family, fearing for the future of their livelihood, decided to ask their second eldest son to leave. Emil's has a deep, dark secret, that he carries to this day--he is deeply fond of his family. His family's concerns are his own, and staying after being asked to leave wasn't really something he could do morally--nevermind other considerations. So he left. Rather bitterly, but he left. From western Ciet, Doma was the place to go. The barely civilized Outlands weren't an actual option, of course, and going to Nagra would necessitate passing through the sylph-infested border forest. Not only was Doma the closest, but it was the only safe and morally viable option. RPs
