History

Avon is a very newly established nation, having yet to see it's fourth year. Thus, it is mostly overlooked by the other nationalities of Gaera, due in part to its own isolation. Once, it was home to a people known as nomadic people called the Jitsuko. These Jitsuko are believed to have been the descendants of an ancient culture that predates Gaera's written history; but that knowledge has been lost to time.

Approxiamately fifty years ago, in 1264, a plague swept through the the Jitsuko sects, killing much of the population. In 1284, another wave all but finished off the people. What did strike the final blow against the Jitsuko was the coming of a demonic horde in 1293, lead by the Archdemon Jinah. As the last Jitsuko was slaughtered, Jinah's horde took control of the Avon grasslands.

He then left his hordes, seeking a power hidden within the ruins of the pre-Jitsuko people. It is not known what he found, but some of Igala' s most sensitive mages felt eminantion of holy energy in late summer of 1293. A scar was ripped into the central plain by the source of that emination.

Jinah came back a changed demon. Harshly, he ordered his hordes to return to the Underworld. Once there, he began to travel the reaches of it. Then, he expanded outwards, leaving the Underrealm and traveling other worlds.

In 1310, Jinah returned to the Avon Grasslands, bearing the name Reshikal. Behind him was a ragtag horde of demon, thousands of them. They began to settle the plain, but not as a conquering force. Rather, they desired to live in peace. Reshikal had inspired them to cast aside the brutal ways of their ancestors, and seek a path that most demons do not contemplate -- one of redemption.

Since then, Reshikal has lead his people, who have taken the name Avons, to build a society that is based around knowledge and understanding. It's capital and principle city, Loradan, is rapidly becoming a center of learning under Reshikal's peaceful reign.

Geography

The Avon Grasslands are still mostly a wildlands, as the Avons work to settle it. Much of the population is based around Loradan, which rests on the banks of the Hanij River, which is the Grasslands' major source of fresh water. Perhaps Five thousand Avons call it home. All the other towns are within a two day's ride of Loradan. There has been talk of establishing a port at the mouth of the Hanij. The homes in Avon are mostly stone, pulled from the earth by demonic geomancers. The complexity of a home depends on the geomancer's skill.

The lands near the river banks are excellent for farming, and a few Avons have taken up the trade, almost as a curiosity given that most of the residents are happy to either hunt or need not eat at all. Luckly, the plains seem to be able to support the hunting population thus far, and are mostly unsuitable for farming.

Beyond the Avons' holdings, there is not much to be see. Here and there, once can find the ruins of the pre-Jitsuko people, but they are only foundations and crumbling walls, lacking any treasures save artifacts only an archeologist would care about.

Society and Foreign Relations

Avon is a very peaceful society. Reshikal is a rather relaxed ruler, and the Avons are generally able to control themselves well. The laws are mostly simple, going along the lines of respect your fellows. The Avons are loyal to Reshikal, so policing is not needed en masse just yet. Most conflicts are reported to a council of judges, and are arbitrated there.

Reshikal holds total power over the government, but he employs a council of advisors to assist him in making decisions. Still, he may ignore or discard them at a whim. Should Reshikal die, which is unlikely given his power and immortal lifespan, a new ruler shall be chosen by the Council from their own numbers.

The economy is mostly based upon barter, but a coin known as the ou is used there as well. It is a small silver coin with a hole in the center, with "Knowledge is power" inscribed in demonic script. As of yet, no one in Avon is truly rich or poor. Everyone has to work for their keep in some way. This may or may not change as time goes on, depending how Reshikal guides his people.

Avon has yet to trade or open relations with any other nation. Currently, it is not truly advertising that it exists. Reshikal has been considering sending out proper ambassidors, but it is not known when.

Still, some wayfarers have learned of Avon's existence, or stumbled onto it. A few merchants are trying to establish trade ties, while some are interested in seeing how the Avons work to redeem themselves or to help teach them. It is rumored a couple of lesser celestials have been found aiding Reshikal's efforts as well."
