Briefly

Nekonia as a whole is an accepting nation, but also very proud. While most Nekonians don't look down on races per se, there are certain restrictions on the governmental level. For instance, only purebred nekojin are allowed to be ambassadors. However, otherwise, Nekonia welcomes those of other races -- this is partially a result of the necessity of extensive trading, as Nekonia is a landlocked nation.

The king and queen share power with an advisory council, and while the power of that council is limited, unanimous votes can override the decision of the king and queen. Unlike Inustan, the resident monarchs are generally very active in politics and governing.

An important, annual celebration in Nekonia is the Kitiwai Karnival, which attract traders and travelers from all around. Nekonia is currently experiencing tense relations with Inustan after a presumed inujin attack on the king and queen during the previous Kitiwai Karnival.

There is no official religion of Nekonia. Worship of Nekogami is widespread but varied. Traditional faith and worshipping seems most prevalent amongst farmers.

History

Tribal past

Much like the past of neighboring Inustan, Nekonia (a name to come later) started out with multiple tribes called prides. A pride was fairly small, consisting of around 20 adult individuals, mainly female. Upon reaching an appropriate age, males were either sent out or had to challenge the reigning "king" to remain in the pride. Most decided to go out on their own. From this wandering past, the nekojin were more well known throughout the continent than the inujin.

The prides often had their own territory and a semi-permenant settlement. Slowly but surely the prides began to settle into more permanent holdings. During this time the more powerful prides began to bully the smaller or weaker prides.

Nekojin revolution

Around 490, Fenn Khole, an elderly nekojin king from a small settlement near the Cat o' Nine Tails, grew frustrated with the oppression when his village was decimated by King Rey Dell, that had hoped to control the river plains. Khole gathered the refugees and malcontent nekojin from the Cat o' Nine Tails river plains and created an army. Khole campaigned several attacks on King Dell but was always pushed back by Dell's superior forces. It wasn't until the Laire Khole, daughter of Fenn Khole, trained her own army of females to fight alongside her father's forces did the tides turn. Ten years later, Dell's forces were defeated. Khole pressed Dell to pledge allegiance to him and recognize him as king; Dell refused and was executed. However, Dell's son, Takama Dell, assumed his father's place and was dubbed lord. Takama Dell proved to be loyal to Khole and married Laire Khole soon after Khole's death in 510. The region, now jointly under the reign of Takama Dell and Laire Khole, was dubbed Nekonia.

United under one King

Takama grew tired of defending his borders against the other kings and began a campaign to unify all pride lands under one king. The campaign would take three generations to complete. Under the regent Khole Dell, Nekonia's prides were unified and formal borders set up. Each lord was responsible for his own borders but the king was to be aware of all things in Nekonia. An advisory council was put in place but held no real power over the king unless through unanimous decision.

Today: current events

A great center of commerce near the center of Igala, Nekonia rivals Doma in her prosperity. The current regents are the Kitiwais. Recent assassination attempts on their lives have put Nekonia on a heightened state of alert. The Nekonian Special Forces are following several leads and cracking down on crime heavily.

MUSH description

Nekonia(#21Rn):

Nekonia is a proud and lively nation which engages in extensive trading to obtain the necessaries its geographical situation does not provide for. Nekojin is the native and predominant race here, and the extremely observant or educated may come to know that the race itself is divided between the pureblood and the non-pureblood, with visible racial traits discernible between the two. While Nekonian--sometimes referred to as "High Nekonian," is the official language of government documents, citizens of most cities and towns speak Common in their daily lives, and in general it is only the purebred or those living in the out-of-the-way villages who are unilingual in Nekonian. It has been an unofficial practice of the government to translate documents into Common for its people, even though there is no legal requirement to do so.

Nekonia has enjoyed a long period of lasting peace, even with having recently and perhaps narrowly avoided a conflict with neighboring Inustan some years ago. Once a year the capital of Nekonia hosts the Kitiwai Karnial,a festival related to celebrating the goddess Nekogami. Worship of Nekogami is widespread and varied, but there is no official religion. The current regents, the Kitiwais, take a very hands-off approach toward their people and internal affairs and tend toward seeing the management of external issues as their responsibilities. Only purebred nekojin are allowed to be ambassadors for Nekonia.

Money Matters

Nekonia has the mrr, which comes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 100, and 200. Mrr are small metal coins and gems which are differentiated by color, markings, metal, shape. Each coin or gem has a separate name.

  • 1 - (mrr) round silver and copper coin with the symbol of Nekogami (a rose through a circle) on one side and King Khole on the other)
  • 5 - (Qat) hexagonal silver coin with ivy around it on one side and the words "Unity, Indepence, and Beauty" on the other in ancient Nekonian symbols
  • 10 - (Ra) actually a 4 sided dice like coin with slashes on each side. It's made of kholite, a mineral found in Nekonia and some Inustani marshlands
  • 100 - (Dell) a kind of cloudy blue quartz cut to a sphere with a flat side, so it doesn't roll. It's a special color since it's treated with chemicals. Too cloudy or too blue, or not blue enough or not cloudy enough indicates a counterfeit. Counterfeiting is difficult due to the entirely non-magical nature of producing the money and the well-guarded nature of the coloring process.
  • 200 - (Pride) a red opaline gem called pridzine, highly valued by the Nekonians. It's elliptical but flat on on side. Carved in the back is a complex design and "N" for Nekonia and Nekogami. Only with a special engraver's template can the back be carved properly).
