The Mithril Order is a group of Paladins that have Mithra as their patron deity. It consists of no official ranking, so all the Paladins are equal. However, there is a Mithril Council that is the four favored Paladins of Mithra, and they tend to lead.

Though there is no official leader, Kerov Altec is considered by many to be the "face" of the order. This is something he has slowly accepted, and serves as a teacher for the younger paladins.

The Order and Other Races

The Mithril Order does not discriminate between races, and any is free to join. However, the majority of members are human, as the ranks swelled after the Malachian War. There are a few nekojin, inujin, elves, and even a drow or two.

The best kept secret about the order is who the Council refers to as "Flayer." This is an Illithid who saw the light of Justice, and has forsaken his life among the others of his kind in the Underdark to become a Paladin of Mithra. Because of his sacrifice, he is considered the forerunner to become a member of the Mithril Council. However, being a mind flayer has its disadvantages. He is distrusted by almost all, and he has to constantly hide his appearance with enchantments. Nobody in the Order knows about him. When he is referred to in official meetings, he is referred to only as Flayer; his name is never mentioned for fear of someone trying to destroy him.

Flayer himself eats brains to survive, being a Mind Flayer. This lead to an argument among the Council, where upon they finally decided that eating the brains of the unjust is not inherrently wrong. Mithra himself interceeded on the argument, decreeing that Flayer should try not to eat the brains of sentinents, resorting to cattle or other livestock. However, Flayer sometimes cannot help himself, and has been known to eat the brains of an evildoer.

Because he has sacrificecd so much, Flayer is perhaps the most devout Paladin Mithra has. The Council eagerly waits the day when they can reveal him, showing that no creature is incapable of accepting Justice.
